What it means to be an Ice Skater?
Figure Skaters of all disciplines are exceptional athletes. Like a football player wears the colors of their team or how basketball players wear their basket ball shoes proudly, the rhinestones of a figure skaters dress or costume is the exact same. So don’t let the sparkles fool you.
I recently asked myself what it means to be an ice skater? And I could not answer it. I have been skating for over two decades and I caught my mind going blank as I asked myself this question.
At first it scared me that I could immediately answer this. I should be able to, but then I thought about a bigger picture and then I was able to find my answer more clear.
See i beileve all athletes all creative people and all people on this earth have a calling I believe athletes find their calling through the vessel of their craft. Whether it be the apartuas of the gymnastics, the hurdles, the pole vault, the skis underneath their feet, the water being cut through breaking world record speeds, the ice skates are figure skaters vessels in which we find our peace. I think every athlete find solace in what brings them peace and ultimately in that peace they are able to see their calling.
As I thought about this bigger picture thought all of the memories from skating started to flood my mind. How skating was my place where I felt “I” belonged. That’s a very powerful feeling.
How do I know this. Well heres another great reason I have never felt FOMO. Seriously I have never felt that fear of missing out ever. As I have gotten older and the more obligations yes I feel some fomo but as an athlete training growing up missing school events, skipping birthday parties, leaving my hometown after freshman year without a blink of an eye. I just had found my calling.
So being a skater to me is being who I am meant to be. And I think every athlete or person completed invested in something that speaks to their soul that it is who you are. It is apart of you and there is no denying it. Denying it would be living an unfulfilled life.
Now that’s my peace and my story and my reason but there are many different ways to describe what it means to be a skater.
